THE NEW NORMAL

MULTI USE SPACES

BY Pallavi Pinakin

The pandemic has given way to a new home life – one where the house is not simply a residence. It also functions as an office, a gym, a bar and all the other spots that we can no longer frequent. So here are some pointers to keep in mind when you next plan to restyle or renovate your home.

A WORKSPACE Welcome to the work from home (WFH) era! Along with a calming and neutral colour palette, your workspace should be fitted out with sufficient storage for office equipment.

Invest in an ergonomic chair and look for a desk that’s functional – and yet, fits in with the aesthetic of your home.

If you don’t have a room that can serve this purpose, even a dedicated nook in your living room will suffice: a small desk and signature lamp will do to claim the spot as your own.

COMFY SPACES The onset of the home office culture means being extra mindful of reserving some spaces simply for pleasure and spelling the end of the open floor plan for many.

Focus on making leisure oriented rooms more snug and cosy so they allow you to completely switch off from work when you’re in them. Treat yourself to a plush carpet, fuzzy blankets and padded headboard in the bedroom. This will make the space perfect as a relaxation zone.

Elevate your bathroom to the next level with decorative mirrors, metal accented faucets and mood lighting.

NATURE’S SPACE Breathe easily with natural eco-friendly decor: think terracotta, bamboo, clay, stone and other materials, which reflect the world outside and bring nature into your comfort zone.

Houseplants provide the much needed verdant hues and a sense of tranquillity while recycling the air you breathe and providing an oxygen boost. Parquet floors evoke a tree house feel and Japanese screens recreate a natural play of light.

Make good use of maple and teak furniture, cotton bedspreads and jute plant hangers.

DOUBLE UP SPACE Take a multifunctional approach since creativity is vital for smaller homes. For example, your guest bedroom could double up as a home office with a sofa bed as a smart solution.

With indoor parties being restricted for many of us, the garden or patio have become primary spots for social gatherings. Invest in foldable cane furniture that can be stored away when the party is over and leave you with a wide-open space once again.
