Thanks to the pandemic, people around the world have spent more time at home than ever before. If this trend is likely to continue for you, it makes sense to create your very own study or den.

This will be a sanctuary where you can work, learn and pursue your hobbies. Since you don’t need heaps of space, even a small room that’s thoughtfully designed and equipped can facilitate the focus and engagement you need.

LOOKING BEYOND For many of us, the typical image of a study or den comes from old Hollywood films and classic novels. But let’s keep in mind that times have changed and your ‘me zone’ doesn’t need to have an imposing desk, heavy curtains and serious portraits lining the wall.

Modern workspaces tend to be light, airy and welcoming – with an energising colour palette and creative artwork to set an inspiring tone.

Those who draw positive energy from the outdoors can add some potted plants to the decor while others who are working towards a big goal could create a vision board for their daily encouragement.

No matter what you choose, your study or den should suit your unique personality rather than that of a fictional character.

EASIER ACCESS Choose one wall and make the most of it by installing long mounted shelves or lining it with labelled storage units. This is where you can store your books, files, work accessories and supplies to enjoy your hobbies. You’ll be able to see everything at a glance and access any item with ease.

If you have a large collection of books and want to add an old-world library charm to the room, consider installing custom shelves that extend all the way up to the ceiling. But if you live in a place with lots of dust or humidity, it’s better to opt for closed storage.

LIGHTING UP Recent science has taught us a lot about what aids productivity and attention. Try and bring in as much natural sunlight as possible into the room and ensure that it is illuminated well after dark so that your eyesight isn’t strained.

Invest in a chair that’s ergonomically designed so you can maintain the right posture while working and invest in a comfy chair for laid-back reading. When it comes to your desk, keep the surface clear so you can focus on the task at hand instead of being distracted by clutter.
