Politicians such as Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, as well as artists such as singer Beyoncé and actor Chadwick Boseman, took part in the Paraiso do Tuiuti parade on Saturday.

Paraiso do Tuiuti is one of 12 schools in the so-called Special Group, which provides music and color to the 700-meter-long Sambadrome in central Rio de Janeiro.

The crowd cheered the return of the carnival, which was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the first time the event has been cancelled since the first Carnival in 1840.

The Paraiso do Tuiuti parade also highlights figures such as US activist Angela Davis and showcases stories of struggles, such as NASA’s first space engineer Mary Winston Jackson ) story, she had to be in the “Black-Only” division early in her career.
