FLIP YOUR DO FOR THE SEASON

Keen to add some oomph to your current hairstyle for the summer months? Look no further than the “flip”, a trend beloved by everyone from Hailey Bieber and Kim Kardashian to Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande – and soon enough, you too. “Flicky and flippy ends are having a real resurgence,” explains hairstylist Larry King. “It’s fresh, clean and takes inspiration from the ’60s, but with a more modern, smooth finish and some root lift at the crown.”

One that King made earlier: the perfect example of the flip in full force.

The beauty of the flip is that it works on most haircuts, and lends a touch of energy and youth to a style, with minimal fuss required in order to achieve it. It has its roots in the ’60s, an era when women spent a significant amount of time and effort on creating a perfect and long-lasting flip. “It was made popular with the help of style heroines, such as Jackie Kennedy and Mary Tyler Moore – and it really defined the decade,” says King.

Kennedy’s signature flip, which varied in intensity depending on the look she was going for, was copied by millions of women around the world. “Even global superstars like Diana Ross and the Supremes sported versions of the look made popular by the First Lady,” adds King. The year 2022’s answer to the style is not so pronounced, nor paired with a bouffant. Instead, it’s best worn in a jaw-length bob, shoulder-length style or in a ponytail, as demonstrated by Hailey Bieber.
