Art on a Colourful Canvas of Attir
BY Ruwandi Perera
Batik is art on a canvas of clothing – and it’s the exotic, tropical ‘princess of the fashion world.’ Bright and beautiful statement making batik wear is versatile and can be worn on many occasions – from formal weddings and cocktails to beach and garden parties.
In the old days, batik was seen mainly in sarees, sarongs, lungis and kaftans; but today, we find batik swimwear, resort wear, T-shirts, and even pants and cocktail dresses.
Given the intricate workings and enormous effort that goes into crafting these handmade items, batik is greatly valued for being unique. It’s simple enough to portray the straightforwardness of the wearer and sufficiently elaborate to reflect a sense of sophistication, no matter where you wear it, day or night.
Batik wear paired with simple jewellery such as elegant drop earrings, a single strand necklace and classy clutch means you’re ready to go – anywhere, anytime. And even if you may feel dressed up to the nines on the outside, you’ll feel relaxed and comfortable inside.
It’s not for the faint-hearted though – for once you go batik, you’ll never go back!
