Here’s your fibre fix!

Fazmina Imamudeen explores the importance of fibre for long-term wellbeing

Fibre is the steady force behind your health. Hidden in everyday foods, this simple nutrient quietly supports your body’s most essential functions and keeps digestion smooth, the heart healthy and energy steady.

It does far more than regulate digestion; it boosts heart health, balances blood sugar levels and even helps manage weight. Yet, and despite its remarkable benefits, most people fail to consume enough of it.

WHAT IS FIBRE? At its core, fibre is a plant based carbohydrate. But unlike other carbs, it resists digestion. Instead, it passes through your system intact while carrying out essential tasks along the way.

There are two types of fibre, each with distinct benefits.

Soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance that slows digestion and stabilises blood sugar levels. Foods such as oats, beans and apples are excellent sources of soluble fibre.

Insoluble fibre acts like nature’s broom since it sweeps through your digestive tract, adding bulk to stools and ensuring regularity. You will find it in wholegrains, nuts, seeds and leafy greens.

Both types of fibre are vital for the body; and together, these form a quiet but powerful foundation for good health.
