As temperatures soar and cities sizzle, a growing number of travellers are flipping the script on traditional summer vacations. Welcome to the age of the ‘coolcation’ – a chilled out alternative to sun-drenched holidays.
Rather than chasing sunshine, globetrotters are heading north, climbing higher and venturing farther, to explore cooler climates and escape the heat. Travellers can now discover the world’s most invigorating destinations where they can hike, roam and breathe deeply, all without breaking a sweat!
Norway

Norway offers a refreshingly cool retreat from the summer heat with temperatures typically staying around 20°C. Travellers enjoy long daylight hours especially above the Arctic Circle where the midnight sun never sets on this land of fjords, glacial valleys and picturesque coastal towns. Hiking trails wind through national parks while scenic rail journeys and fjord cruises reveal the country’s natural grandeur. Visitors can explore charming villages, sample fresh seafood or simply take in the crisp refreshing air.
Iceland

Summer in Iceland means extended daylight, brisk temperatures and surreal landscapes. Average highs of 13°C keep things refreshingly cool as travellers explore geothermal fields, black sand beaches and towering waterfalls. The Ring Road, which circles the island, offers access to glaciers, volcanic plains and quaint coastal towns. Whale watching, glacier hiking and soaking in hot springs under the midnight sun are among the season’s highlights. Iceland’s raw natural beauty combined with its mystical atmosphere makes it a unique destination for those looking to escape the heat and experience something truly cool.
Scotland

Scotland’s summers are as cool as they’re scenic with average temperatures rarely exceeding 20°C. Visitors can explore windswept moors, dramatic coastlines and centuries old castles without breaking a sweat. The Highlands offer endless hiking and photo opportunities, while islands such as Skye abound with rugged beauty and quiet charm. In cities such as Edinburgh, summer festivals fill the streets with music, theatre and culture. Along the way, warm hospitality, local whiskies and cosy pubs provide a comforting contrast to the crisp air outside.
Hokkaido

Japan’s northernmost island offers a peaceful summer climate with temperatures ranging between 17°C and 25°C; it makes for a breath of fresh alpine scented air. The region is known for its wildflower fields, volcanic mountain ranges and pristine national parks such as Daisetsuzan. Travellers enjoy hiking, cycling and hot spring bathing under clear summer skies. Sapporo, the island’s capital, blends urban energy with natural charm while rural onsen villages offer traditional hospitality. Hokkaido invites visitors to slow down, cool off and immerse themselves in Japan’s wild unspoiled north.
Canada

Canada’s vast wilderness offers a variety of cool escapes during the summer months with temperatures generally ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Whether it’s canoeing through Ontario’s lake country, hiking in the Rocky Mountains or spotting whales off the coasts of British Columbia and Nova Scotia, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures. National parks such as Banff and Jasper provide stunning vistas of glaciers, forests and turquoise lakes. Meanwhile, cities such as Vancouver and Montreal offer a mix of cultural events, local cuisine and waterfront relaxation. Canada delivers a classic coolcation experience with nature and crisp air.
Patagonia

Patagonia, which stretches across southern Argentina and Chile, is one of the coolest places on Earth. Even in the winter (between June and August), temperatures remain low and make for a cold weather adventure in the middle of the year. The region features jagged mountains, windswept plains, glaciers and remote hiking trails. Highlights include the Torres del Paine National Park, Perito Moreno Glacier and those iconic peaks of Monte Fitz Roy. For those who crave the dramatic and wild, Patagonia is the ultimate coolcation destination – raw, remote and unforgettable.
