Winding up – and down
Is this year on steroids – or is our solar system picking up its pace so much that we can’t catch up? ‘Stop!’ We shout to no avail. And so we run with the times – after all, what are we Sri Lankans if not adaptable?
One thing you can do to feel as if you’ve made use of time is to travel!
It’s always a good time to visit Singapore but September is extra special since the city-state is hosting the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2024 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit between 20 and 22 September.
If racing doesn’t appeal to you, look no further than neighbouring India with its assortment of destinations from beaches and ancient cities to snow-capped mountains – which to be honest, many aren’t aware of.
And if you need a suggestion, Keralites will be celebrating the annual Onam harvest festival from 6 to 15 September with trumpets, elephants, boat races and a cultural extravaganza.
For those who would rather stay back in sunny (or rainy) Sri Lanka, this time of year is usually when we’re in a bizarre state of mind. We want to get some good work done but can’t help thinking of the upcoming end of year rush.
Dinner dances dot our calendars, and could include school centred and company hosted events. Hotels tempt us by offering various promotions to make the most of the holiday season – and we gleefully accept.
And Colombo cooks up an array of events from concerts to carnivals to keep our Friday nights busy.
In October, cricket loving Sri Lankans will be on the edge of their seats as our island’s pride of lionesses head to Bangladesh for the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The lasses have proven themselves to the nation and Sri Lankans are rooting for our champion players to wow them… yes, again!
And our couch potato shape will worsen in November because it’s ‘movie marathon month’!
Get ready for the piercing vocals of Ariane Grande and the je ne sais quoi charm of Jeff Goldblum in Wicked 2, and embark on a dangerous oceanic journey with Maui and Moana to see how far the latter will go to answer the call of her ancestors.
Also prepare to have your Christmas stockings in a twist when Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans team up to save Santa in Red One.
And before you know it, 2024 will come to an end… and another new year will be around the corner.
