In the ever evolving landscape of global tourism, ‘noctourism’ is a fascinating new trend that’s captivating travellers. This burgeoning movement celebrates the allure and mystique of the night, offering adventurers an opportunity to explore destinations under the cover of darkness.

From moonlit safaris to bustling night markets, noctourism invites travellers to experience the world in an entirely new light – or lack thereof.

Whether it’s the thrill of exploring a city’s hidden alleyways or the serenity of nature under the stars, noctourism is reshaping the way we travel… and inviting us to discover the magic that unfolds when the world goes to sleep.

Desert Lights

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the night sky in one of the world’s first designated ‘dark sky reserves.’ The NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia offers an unparalleled stargazing experience in which the Milky Way stretches across the horizon with stunning clarity. Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, this reserve provides an unpolluted environment, making it a haven for astronomers and nature enthusiasts alike. Visitors can join guided night walks or simply lie back and gaze at the stars, and immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the desert night.

Fire Dragon Dance

Immerse yourself in the electrifying atmosphere of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance. This traditional mid-autumn festival in Hong Kong features a 67 metre long dragon adorned with burning incense sticks, parading through the streets to the beat of drums and gongs. The dance, which originated over a century ago, is believed to ward off the plague and bring good luck. This vibrant display of cultural heritage attracts thousands of spectators each year, who gather to witness the fiery spectacle in the historic Tai Hang neighbourhood.

Truffle Hunting

Embark on a nocturnal adventure through the forests of Piedmont, Italy, guided by expert truffle hunters and their trained dogs. The thrill of discovering the coveted truffles under moonlight makes for a memorable and unique culinary experience. Piedmont is renowned for its white truffles and the hunting season from October to December offers a chance to partake in this centuries old tradition. After the hunt, savour the freshly unearthed truffles in gourmet dishes paired with the region’s exquisite wines.

Penguin Parade

Witness the charming sight of diminutive penguins returning to their burrows during the nightly ‘Penguin parade’ at Phillip Island, Australia. This enchanting event draws nature lovers who are eager to observe these adorable creatures in their natural habitat. The parade takes place at sunset with visitors watching from designated viewing platforms to minimise disturbance. Phillip Island Nature Parks also offers guided ranger tours and eco accredited experiences, which provide insights into the behaviour of the penguins and conservation efforts.

Aurora Borealis

Marvel at the spectacular northern lights in Iceland where the dancing aurora borealis illuminates the night sky in a mesmerising display of colours. This natural phenomenon is a bucket list experience for many as it offers a glimpse of nature’s most extraordinary light show. The best time to view this aurora is from September to April with popular viewing spots including Thingvellir National Park, Jökulsárlón glacial lake and the remote Westfjords Region. Guided tours often combine aurora hunting with visits to geothermal hot springs, creating magical and unforgettable nights.

Petra Night Show

Step back in time with the Petra Night Show in Jordan. As you walk through the ancient city by candlelight, the path to the ‘Treasury’ is lit with thousands of flickering candles, creating a mystical ambience that enhances the grandeur of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The experience includes a traditional Bedouin musical performance and storytelling session, which enables visitors to connect with the rich history and culture of Petra. The night show runs three times a week and offers a serene and intimate way to explore this archaeological wonder.
