A Three in One Design Aesthetic

This residential renovation project comprises three existing buildings. These were built at different points in time and sat next to each other down a private lane in Thalawathugoda. The constructor’s challenge was to combine the three different architectural languages of the buildings into a coherent and cohesive design aesthetic. They were very keen to use locally sourced materials and also reused others for new purposes. The entrance porch features stones sourced from an old tea factory. Their cubic form evokes a sense of formality while the worn-out surface of the stone adds a dimension of age and history. The linear forms of the louvred doors and windows made of reused old jak wood tie in this aspect. Contemporary, seamlessly cut and polished floors, along with seamless concrete soffits used in the public areas, provide a contrasting freshness of contem-porary design. Modern sofas in linen and antique ebony chairs, along with a carefully curated collection of antiques and paintings, help the interiors achieve a timeless character. An unwavering attention to detail, a thoughtful curation of spaces to enable a seamless flow from one area to another and the cohesive design language have united three very different buildings into one home.
