PARISIAN Spring

The allure of Paris

Monita Pesumal shares a few tips for a springtime visit to the City of Light

In the bloom of early spring, Paris unveils a serene but melancholic charm as it awakens from the deep winter slumber. Here are some tips that may help you if you’re planning a trip to the ‘City of Love’ or ‘City of Light’ (it’s known by both names) in spring.

Think wisely about accommodation. Paris is pricey and you will likely spend most of your time exploring the magical city. Hôtel Mercure Paris Centre Tour Eiffel or Novotel Paris Centre Tour Eiffel are a stone’s throw away from the Eiffel Tower.

These simple yet stylish four star hotels will not have you breaking the bank. What’s more, Novotel is also adjacent to the Centre Commercial Beaugrenelle shopping mall, which houses the popular Galeries Lafayette department store. It’s your gateway to some of the world’s finest fashion houses under one roof.

Don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Seine as it will introduce you to the city’s old charm; or take a cruise along the river for a different perspective of this alluring city.

For 15 euros, book an hour’s tour that will have you cruising on a glass canopy boat past the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, Conciergerie and Musée d’Orsay.

Indulge in Parisian cafe culture by grabbing a cosy seat at one of the city’s quaint pavement cafes. Sip a café crème, people watch and immerse yourself in the ambience that has inspired artists and thinkers for decades.

Don’t leave Paris without trying buttery and flaky croissants, petits fours, tarts and pastries. Head to Ladurée, Fauchon or Pierre Hermé to indulge in some exquisite macarons.

And don’t leave without visiting the iconic Eiffel Tower – because springtime means a smaller crowd and you will enjoy the breathtaking views with quiet reflection.

Take a walk down the Champs-Élysées where the finesse of Paris comes to life.

Then visit the Arc de Triomphe, which is a symbol of French national pride. The Champs-Élysées connects the Arc de Triomphe with the Place de la Concorde and is one of the world’s most famous commercial streets.

And shop at the flagship stores of Dior, Louis Vuitton and Chanel; or simply window-shop and take selfies instead.

Appreciate the historical significance of Place de la Concorde where the Luxor Obelisks stand tall and some stunning fountains add to the majestic ambience of the locale. This square has witnessed many pivotal moments in French history and is a must-see landmark.
