Acclaimed photographer Douglas Friedman is renowned for his evocative images of architecture and design. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has captured the essence of some of the world’s most iconic interior designers. His projects include a book about California designer Nicole Hollis, another on the homes of American fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger, a glassware collaboration with the heritage Austrian glassmaker Lobmeyr and a line of skis for Italian company Bomber Ski.
So it’s only fitting that his own home in Marfa, Texas, was selected as one of Architectural Digest’s 50 Great Houses – a testament to Friedman’s refined eye for design, comfort and landscape integration.
The stunning West Texas ranch, which has been listed for US$ 2.995 million, is an architectural landmark in Marfa. This three bedroom, three bath contemporary home sits on over four hectares, and abuts thousands of hectares of ranch land, offering unobstructed views of the Davis and Haystack mountains.
Its unique design features a modular system of glue laminated timber, steel connectors and structural insulated panels. Floor to ceiling windows encircle the home, allowing for spectacular natural light and views. And the home blends modern conveniences with top of the line appliances.
Bedrooms located at either end of the hallway ensure privacy while concealed storage and mechanicals maintain a sleek, uninterrupted flow. An open floor plan connects the living and dining areas with glass doors that open onto a seating area with a firepit that’s perfect for watching the sun set over the mountains.
A path leads from the house to a lovely desert palapa for lounging or outdoor dining. Farther down the path is a container lap pool with a built-in hot tub. Although the beautifully landscaped grounds filled with native plants offer a private and serene atmosphere, the home is only three kilometres from Marfa’s downtown area.
While the town’s most famous resident was the artist and founder of The Chinati Foundation Donald Judd, numerous A-listers have visited or stayed there. Actor Matthew McConaughey is a frequent visitor, while celebrities such as actress Elizabeth Taylor and singer Beyoncé have stopped by.
The area’s stark desert landscape has made it appealing as a film location with the classic film Giant (starring James Dean), the Oscar winning No Country for Old Men and a few other notable movies having been shot there.
