The House at Thurstan
This five bedroom house is located on Kumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha (formerly Thurstan Road) in front of Royal College Primary School. It was the client’s ancestral property; but since the old house was inadequate for her needs, it was demolished. By doing so, it was possible to begin fulfilling the client’s requirements. Because she wanted a large garden, the structure was located perpendicular to the main road. It’s a linear building comprising ground plus two floors and its smaller footprint allows for a large garden on the side. The short side faces the path of the sun, and the public spaces and bedrooms face east, and out to the garden. A courtyard separates the service areas from the main house and the service block was placed in front so that it functions as a buffer against the noise from the main road. The ground floor has living and dining areas, and one bedroom. A paved terrace connects this space with the garden. There are staffrooms, two bedrooms and a living/working space on the first floor, which is where the occupant spends most of her time. The second floor has two guestrooms and a large terrace with views of the surrounding neighbourhood.
