We are dependent on bees for our survival. By now people are becoming increasingly aware of this. Together with many other insect species, they pollinate a large part of all plant species on earth. This makes them enormously important for biodiversity, the richness of food chains, and ultimately for the preservation of our world’s ecosystems.
A world without bees?
In her novel “The Story of the Bees”, Norwegian author Maja Lunde paints a picture of a future without these insects: After all the bees have disappeared, the flowers will have to be pollinated by hand.
In reality, this would not be possible across the entire planet. Natural pollination is virtually impossible to replace within ecosystems. Ultimately, about 80 per cent of all plant species rely on some form of pollination from other sources. This includes most varieties of fruit and vegetables.
The consequences of the extinction of bees are difficult to estimate, but would include an enormous extinction of species, not only of plants but along the entire food chain, as well as extreme food shortages.
Commitment and Dedication
More and more people, institutions, and companies are recognizing the enormous importance of these little insects and are getting involved in the protection of bees.
Many sustainable hotels – including the Green Pearls® partners – are also committed to protecting bees, working together with beekeepers, or having their own beehives in addition to their other initiatives. However, one partner, in particular, stands out from the crowd. The APIPURA Hotel Rinner is completely dedicated to bees, has firmly integrated them into the design concept, and also runs an organic apiary alongside the hotel. In this newsletter, we would like to introduce the hotel, the organic beekeeping, and their special Api-Wellness offering.
Bee Protection and Sustainability
Spreading the word about the importance of bees is a matter close to the heart of the Rinner family. As one of the last migratory beekeepers in the region, Paul Rinner has a special relationship with these special animals. Their welfare is above all else for him. When he starts talking about bees, he inspires his listeners with enthusiasm.
The welfare of the bees includes offering them the best possible food sources that are free of dangerous chemicals and refraining from the use of synthetic medicines. As a logical result of this attitude and philosophy, the beekeeping is also certified by Bioland.
The bees of the organic apiary are allowed to pursue their own honeycomb production. No honeycombs are completely removed for the comb honey either. Instead, Paul Rinner only removes a small part and allows his bees to follow their natural building instinct and close the hole again.
Beehive in the Breakfast Room
The guests at APIPURA Hotel Rinner are always very close to the industrious insects. In the breakfast room, a live image is transmitted to the screens showing the hustle and bustle of the bee colony in an old tree trunk. Guests can watch the fascinating activity while enjoying their morning coffee.
Innovative and Beneficial: Api-Wellness on the Ritten
The bees not only provide organic honey for the hotel and the small shop, but are also the stars of the wellness area. This is housed in a wooden building at the end of the bee trail. Through the windows, you have a spectacular view of the South Tyrolean mountains. Several beehives stand in front of the cosy armchairs. Inside: beeswax, propolis, pollen, and various other substances that are beneficial to our health. With the help of a system developed by Jürgen Schmiedgen, the beehive air is gently extracted without stressing the animals and can then be used for inhalation. Api-Wellness is not only relaxing, it also has a positive effect on respiratory diseases and allergies.
The Hotel Under the Sign of the Bee
APIPURA, the pure bee. At least roughly, this is how one could translate the name of the family-run hotel. The former bee house was converted with much love and attention to detail and invites families and couples alike to relax and unwind. Honey and the passion for bees runs through the design and concept: small decorations on the restaurant tables, embroidery elements on the towels, natural cosmetics with honey or buzzing visitors in the outdoor wellness area. The bees are very much a part of everything.
Rooms and Facilities
The lovingly furnished rooms and suites offer plenty of space and comfort to relax after an eventful day. Families are also catered for: in summer, there is an activity programme for children, if they are not running around in the hotel’s own playground anyway.
Adults and wellness lovers get their money’s worth in the cosy outdoor wellness area. This includes an outdoor whirlpool and a charming barrel sauna with a view of the mountains.
Culinary Delights with Honey Elements
Guests will also come across honey again and again in the menu, and not only on the breakfast buffet, but especially at the weekly honey dinner! With organic honey from the hotel’s own apiary taking centre stage.
The APIPURA Hotel Rinner is certified organic. But chef Manfred also places an even greater focus on supporting regional farmers who often simply cannot afford organic certification.
Guests will enjoy delicious creations made from regional, high-quality ingredients. Always with a special twist.
Green Initiatives
In addition to conscious purchasing and the protection of bees, the Rinner family also keeps an eye on their responsibility as hotel operators. Energy comes from the new district heating plant, which is powered by waste from local wood production. A rainwater reservoir is used to irrigate the garden, while drinking water comes from the Rittnerhorn mountain spring.
A holiday under the sign of the bee is a special experience, and the unique Api-Wellness provides lasting relaxation. A stay at the APIPURA Hotel Rinner also awakens enthusiasm for the little insects and an awareness of their importance for our environment.
