Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at the beginning of the rock ‘n’ roll era, ten years before four young men from Liverpool revolutionized music.

Despite the fact that The Beatles disbanded at the end of the 1960s, their influence has loomed enormous over British history for well over half a century, much like Her Majesty.

The Queen reigned for an astounding 70 years before her death last Thursday at the age of 96, and her meeting with The Beatles was one of the most memorable moments of her reign.

As we reflect on the incredible reign of Queen Elizabeth, we recall the moment when pop royalty met the actual thing, as well as what transpired beforehand.

Before the Beatles, 10-year-old Paul McCartney celebrates the birth of the Queen.

Okay, it wasn’t a face-to-face encounter, but five years before he met John Lennon, Paul McCartney had some form of relationship with Queen Elizabeth II.

“When I was 10 years old, I joined an essay contest in Liverpool and won my division with an essay about the British Monarchy, so I have been a fan for a very long time,” McCartney explained.

“By the time the Queen was crowned in 1953, everyone on our street in Speke, Liverpool had a television, and we settled down to watch the Coronation in gorgeous black and white”

On October 25, 1965, The Beatles receive MBEs.
