“The Barn House Studio and Sherwood by The Barn Collaborate with Thema Collection and Control Union to Lead Sri Lanka’s Low-Carbon Hospitality Revolution”
August 13, 2024: The Barn House Studio and Sherwood by The Barn, in collaboration with Thema Collection and Control Union Sri Lanka, hosted the second season of “Thema Talk” on August 13, 2024, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s sustainable event industry. The event, titled “The Low Carbon Strategy for the Sri Lankan Hospitality Industry,” was a pioneering effort to demonstrate actionable steps towards reducing the carbon footprint in the hospitality sector.
Held at the picturesque Sherwood by The Barn, the event was meticulously designed to minimize environmental impact. Key strategies included maximizing the use of natural light and ventilation, incorporating upcycled decorations, eliminating single-use plastics, offering a carbon-efficient, locally sourced vegan menu, and utilizing common transportation for attendees. These measures resulted in a verified carbon emission of just 276.83 kg CO2 for the entire event.
In a groundbreaking move, The Barn House Studio and Sherwood by The Barn achieved carbon neutrality for the event by offsetting the verified carbon emissions. This accomplishment underscores their commitment to leading the way in sustainable event management in Sri Lanka.
A highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between The Barn House Studio and Sherwood by The Barn, and Control Union Inspection (Pvt) Ltd. This MOU paves the way for offering Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Verification and Carbon Neutral Certification to events hosted at these venues. This collaboration marks a significant leap forward for the Sri Lankan sustainable event industry, setting new standards for eco-friendly event practices.
