Striated on the Marsh

Located in the densely populated suburb of Rajagiriya, Striated House faces a marsh and is surrounded by tall buildings on three sides. While the main house faces the marsh to the north, its western façade (which overlooks the street) is solid with concrete fins. This house is built on a small footprint of 1,900 sq ft – and while the first floor comprises guest rooms and living spaces (all of which boast panoramic views), the ground floor contains the dining, kitchen and service areas of the house. Accommodation for domestic aides is connected to the garage and back garden with direct access through the parking area. The second floor consists of the master bedroom, children’s bedrooms and family rooms with a wide balcony. On the uppermost level is the lounge pavilion, which is equipped with a bar; from this vantage point, the occupants enjoy vistas of the wetland marsh and bird life. A biological pond screens the house from the neighbouring buildings and offers a sense of privacy. And finally, the fruit trees that were originally present on the site have been retained, and are now contributing both aesthetically and functionally to the home.
