Storage Tips

Your closet space

How to maximise efficiency
BY Pia Hatch

Our closets are much more than simply storage units; they should display and store our clothes and accessories carefully, offer easy access and guarantee maximum efficiency. Here are 10 ways to make this happen.

SORTING Don’t throw all your clothes in a pile when sorting them. Instead, separate them into categories and sort through each group before moving to the next.

STORING Once you’ve finished sorting, store the clothes by category so that all your options are in one place.

ROLLING If you can roll it, then do it! Cotton T-shirts, workout gear, leggings and pyjamas could be rolled and tucked; and then stored in shoeboxes, wire baskets or clear bins.

CODING If arranging clothes by category isn’t appealing to you, sort them by colour. This can be pleasing – particularly if you’re a ‘visual person.’

DIVIDING Use drawer dividers and maximise space in the compartments. This is ideal for storing items such as socks, tights, underwear and belts.

ORGANISING Place your clothes in the order you dress – for example, underwear in the top drawer, pants in the next and tops in the last.

DISPLAYING Maximise your floor space by displaying your clothes in order of length – from long to short. The floor space on one side is usually sufficient for a shoe rack or small dresser.

SHOWING The clever use of hooks, corkboard or lines on the inside of doors can serve to store and display handbags, scarves, belts and jewellery.

RELEASING Before you introduce a new item to your closet, remember to let an old one go first.

DECORATING If your closet is very small, you can opt for aesthetic changes that give the impression of size. Paint the inside in a light colour, attach mirrors to the doors and walls, or install a light inside.
