Remember when it was cool to layer your eyelids in a frosted metallic sheen? Cool once more, this 1990s trend is making a comeback. Spotted on every major beauty influencer and celebrity alike – swathes of shimmer have lit up the lids of Lily James, Jourdan Dunn, Lizzo, Hailey Bieber and Rihanna.
“It was the cool girl trend of the 1990s,” says Dominic Skinner, make-up artist and ambassador for MAC, “less Britney and more of a Xtina attitude”. Often teamed up with a strong liner or big lashes, “It was about embracing the feminine but giving it a Seattle grunge scene vibe”.
Why the sudden revival? According to Skinner, it’s coming out of the Euphoria craze – “The sparkle, the individuality, the statement – it all plays a part in the empowerment of wearing something bold and fun.”
How to apply frosted eyeshadow
“With this look you definitely want to prep your eyes with a primer,” says Skinner, “this will stop the shadow from falling”. Next, apply your chosen frosted shadow using your fingertips. “Start on the inner edge of your eye and sweep your finger towards the outer edge of the eye to get that full-on frosted shine.”
To finish, Skinner recommends taking a small fluffy brush to blend the shadow from the lid to the socket and way up to the brow. Feeling adventurous? “Take a deep frosted shade and work it into the crease to smoke out the eye.”
